I caught a train into the city the other day and as I waited for it I was watched a young couple very caught up in each other, oblivious to me and the rest of the platform. I tried to remember the last time I gazed with such intensity, my husband and I couldn’t even see each other without our glasses on these days, much less gaze so fiercely! In fact if we go to a romantic restaurant we even have to put our glasses on to see what we are eating, especially in subdued lighting. I wandered if desire in any form is something only for the young. Maybe as you get older, romance is something you have to consciously work at. I do think that when you hit your forties and fifties there is more time to do things together. You no longer have young kids in the house requiring your attention at all hours of the night, it is easier to make time for each other. You can be more spontaneous, there is no need to organise baby sitters, lifts or suppers while you go out. It gives you a certain freedom and lets you focus on each other. I think women enjoy the romance and fun of occasionally getting dressed up to go somewhere nice that involves good food, a beautiful ambiance and candles . My husband’s view on the other hand is that men are happy if they are having a lot of sex regularly! On the subject of desire or the loss of it, I know a few people who enjoyed the film Hope Springs and found it quite inspiring but honestly I found it a bit depressing that two people who were so in love ended up so disconnected after 30 years. I know it’s only a film but it obviously happens. The positive is that they find each other again and rekindle the romance and desire that they once had, so on that cheerful note, Happy Valentines Day!

Harrods have the most beautiful Chinese New Year windows. It is the year of the snake and they have these amazing metal snake sculptures that have been dramatically lit. My photos are not great, there is too much reflection but you get an idea of how stunning they are.

One of the colours I have noticed coming through in handbags from all labels is the colour blush or nude. Everyone is calling it something different but everyone is doing a version of it. It’s a lovely new take on neutrals instead of the usual beige, sand or cream.

I am amazed at how much embellishment is still around. Collars and cuffs, simple dresses with heavily embellished necklines and bodices and sequins and crystals sewn into printed motifs on any garments.

This is the first album Kristina Train has done since 2009 and it seems to have been very well received by music critics. She has an amazing rich and haunting voice. I really like this song.
