Helen Bonham Carter will be on the cover of the July issue of Vogue UK’s ageless issue. At 47 she is truly ageless and looks fantastic. I look forward to reading about her and seeing what clothes they have put her in for the fashion shoot.
New York fascinates me, there is always something happening on the streets. It’s frantically busy and the thing I love doing the most when I’m there is to just walk the streets looking at everyone and seeing what they are wearing and how they interact, or rather don’t interact with each other!
I was strolling up 5th Avenue a few days ago and an elderly Hispanic man wearing a smart grey suit, a long pink wig, and a white cowboy hat rode past on a tiny bicycle waving at everyone! I was dying to take a photo of him and raced after him but he was moving too fast for me and I missed him!
Around the very next corner was a young girl walking what can only be described as a small horse. Somewhere in an apartment in the middle of Manhattan this girl is keeping this dog which looked like a cross between a Great Dane, a Blood Hound and Boxer. He looked extremely happy to be out and about and was strolling along very obediently sniffing everything.
When my husband and I were walking to dinner a few nights ago along Park Ave we spotted this enormous pile up of crashed cars on the corner of 52nd and for a minute I thought what a terrible crash, how did that happen. As we got closer we saw it was a specifically designed set with broken cars, building rubble and broken glass and it had all been laid out for the filming of the new Spiderman film. We tried to go back the next day to watch the actual filming but the streets were blocked off for filming.
Memorial Day was on the 27th May and usually in New York that means Fleet Week when the Navy comes to town and thousands of sailors and marines converge on the city in their sparkling white, navy and red dress uniforms. Unfortunately this year due to budget cuts the decision was taken not to have Fleet Week. There was a lot of media coverage about it as it generates a lot of tourism for New York plus it inspires enormous patriotism. I personally missed it as I love the atmosphere it creates. We were in Boston on the 4th July last year where they kept the Navy week and it was wonderful seeing all the serving sailors wandering around and interacting with the people of Boston. Thousand of people went down to the docks to look over the ships and watch the very impressive fly by performed by the Blue Angels, the air force pilots. This Memorial Day we fleet we should do something so we went down to the Hudson River Harbor where the decommissioned aircraft carrier the USS Intrepid is permanently docked as the base for the Air and Space museum. I had no idea how big these ships are, they are a mini city all on their own supporting, feeding and housing hundreds of sailors, pilots, mechanics, cooks and nurses and doctors. The Columbia Space Shuttle will be on permanent display there from July and it would be fascinating to have a look over that when it gets there.
In a city of 8.3 million people, there are 19 million in the state of New York, there is always someone to be intrigued by.
There are still a lot of embellished and beaded collars around. J Crew have done a range of white cotton and denim shirts with beaded embroidered fronts and collars. Louis Vuitton have done the same on pockets of dresses.
